This is the story I’ve been dreading for more than a week. But after nearly two weeks, I can put it off no more.

A little personal observation has shown that most people who are thinking about Haiti’s catastrophe are most acutely aware of all these beautiful children, some broken and hurting, [...]
Reports of continuing aftershocks over the last week have me worried that it may not be over yet. This morning, a 6.1 magnitude aftershock was felt, frightening already stressed people on the ground.
What worries me is the possibility that last week’s 7.0 was actually a foreshock and something worse is yet to come. It’s [...]
I went to work today wearing a red shirt under my work shirt to mark the 7th day since the earthquake that shook Haiti last week.
I didn’t sleep much last night, partly tormented by terrible stories I’ve been hearing all weekend long. The children are a huge story this week: the orphans who were [...]
Just a quick note before I go in to work. Thanks to a link on CNN’s iREport website, I have finally heard news of my cousin and her daughter. They have been found alive and well.
We got lucky, too many families have been broken up or have perished entirely. Please continue your [...]
[ 27 June, 2009; ] Ok, Tween Day is a made-up holiday. It happens to fall exactly between my birthday and my hubby’s. Given that we are both the same sign, (not that I completely believe in astrology, mind you), we have had our ups and downs: it seems both our strengths and our weaknesses are multiplied by two.
Still, Tween [...]
Thanks to one of my subscribers, Donna Wilcox, who let me know via Twitter first (even before Meghan McCain, who mentioned it second in all my follows), it’s with a very large hole in my heart that I document this fact: Michale Jackson, who was scheduled to become come back next year, is no more.
The world [...]
[ 24 June, 2009; ] One year ago today, Peggie King (née Webb), my mother-in-law, died after undergoing surgery. To this day I’m not sure we know quite what killed her, except a combination of old age, the surgery itself, and the stress on a recently repaired heart (she had open-heart surgery back in 2005, if memory serves).
We miss [...]
Two days ago, (the same day I found the onion thrips on my chives and virtually every other member of the onion family), I decided it was time to fertilize all the vegetable plants (I used the Plant-Tone again). Part of the idea is that better fed plants will do a better job protecting [...]
This is going to be a little different, just random thoughts on various things. I’ll update this and float it to the top as I come up with something. Please feel free to comment below! For the sake of keeping a record, I’ll do my best to remember to add the date [...]
No, your eyes are not deceiving you: there is something different about the look of this site. Although I’ve maintained the casual “jeans” look, things have changed and, I hope, seriously improved.
Ataw Wallpa, or Atahualpa, Last Incan EmperorI recently came across this totally rad theme called “Atahualpa” (presumably named after the Incan Emperor, pictured [...]
